The Aero L-39 Albatros (also known as Ellie) is a Czech jet trainer and light attack aircraft designed for basic and advanced pilot training. It enables cadets to develop flying skills in both simple and challenging weather conditions, by day and at night. The aircraft is also used for combat training, including visual interception of aerial targets, air-to-ground attack exercises, and proficiency training for pilots from military flight schools and operational units. The Kazakhstan Air Force operates an estimated 17 to 19 aircraft of this type, primarily based at Balkhash Air Base. Flight training takes place at the Talgat Begeldinov Military Institute of the Air Defence Forces in Aktobe, as well as at the Balkhash Aviation Training Centre. Six of these aircraft are assigned to Kazakhstan's Sunkar ("Falcon") Aerobatic Team, which performs at military demonstrations, airshows, and exhibitions. Kazakhstan has been gradually upgrading its L-39 fleet. The Czech company Aero Vodochody, the aircraft's original manufacturer, has carried out major overhauls and extensive modernization of Kazakhstan's L-39C aircraft. The upgrades include modern digital avionics, multifunction displays, head-up displays (HUDs), improved communication systems, and new ejection seat systems.
